Following a Character

This is a three part post.

First, select a character from either "The Lottery" or
"Love of Life" and follow their progression through the story.  You will comment on how their character changes from the beginning to the middle to the end.

Second, choose a line from either story and explain why that line is important to the story.

Finally, write about a personal connection you made with either text.  This whole response should be at least 350 words.

26 comments:

  1. First, I choose Mrs. Tessie Hutchinson. At the beginning of the story Tessie came late because she “forgot” about the lottery. She seems like a humor filled good woman. She sits by Mrs. Delacroix; they share a laugh of Tessie being late. Tessie spots her family and makes her way to the front of the line toward her family, on her way people make friendly remarks, a couple of people making humor remarks such as “Bill, she made it after all." Mr. Summers says something and Tessie responds. Everyone laughs softly. In the middle, when Tessie name is called she tells her husband to get the paper. People laugh again. Then everyone looked at the papers and the Hutchinson’s had the “winner” paper. Tessie suddenly accuses Mr. Summers of not giving him enough time to choose. The Hutchinson family has to pull again. Tessie ends up getting the sheet with the black dot on it. At the end, she begs the people not to throw the rocks. Saying that it was unfair but they throw the rocks anyway.
Second, the line that I choose from the text was
“Bill Hutchinson went over to his wife and forced the slip of paper out of her hand. It had a black spot on it, the black spot Mr. Summers had made the night before with the heavy pencil in the coal company office. Bill Hutchinson held it up, and there was a stir in the crowd.”
This is important because now we know who the “winner” of the lottery is. We know that Tessie is going to have something good or bad happen to her. As you read on you find out what the rocks were for and why Tessie was being so silent, with her good humor suddenly evaporated.
Finally, the personal connection I made was with the story “The Lottery “. I made the connection that we do lotteries just not the way that the village does it. I made a smaller connection with Tessie because she found it unfair that Mr. Summers hadn’t gotten Bill a longer turn but he had. I understood that she didn’t want anyone to get hurt in her family including herself.

  2. The character that I chose was from the lottery. I chose Mr.summers the mayor of the village. Mr.summers was energetic and always late in the beginning of the story,Mr.summers came up with an idea that would make the lottery simple so he came up with a idea of making a black box. No one seemed to agree with the idea. Mr.summers didnt put up a fight he went through with the idea of making the lottery simple. While goin toward the middle of the story Mr.summers became patient but seemed to rush people without notice, he was so committed to the lottery. At the end of the story Mr.summers wanted to restart the lottery becuase there was a slight mistake so he began using his mind by actually watching the people and their actions.
line: "It isn't fair, it isn't right," Mrs. Hutchinson screamed and then they were upon her. The reason i chose this line becuase I don't think it was fair at all becuase Mr.summers rushed some people and was patient with some. Mr.summers should have given each person an equal amount of time to take a pull out of the black box. This is when he was patient at the beginning of the story but things changed as the story went on. The lottery, A personal connection I made with the story was when the people of the town each got a chance to pull from the box. The mayor Mr.summers didn't have to go out of his way just to help and connect with the people of the town. It was an exciting event to do but i really didn't get the whole point of doing the lottery. there was no saying that if someone had the slip with the black dot on it would be gifted. I understand that only one person would be chosen and rewarded out of the few people. But like i was saying that was a good thing to do for the town,as mentioned in the story the lottey comes around each year but in some towns they don't do the event. That let me know that the mayor cared about the people of his town.

  3. part 1:
walking down an empty street so quite i could hear my cusions heart beat, all the empty house doors just stayed shut. looking down the road as the wind howls and my skin gets cold. theres an old woman stearing at me from the end of the road, im not sure what she want's but im sure she's very sad. reaching down into my pockets, my hands keep going as if there was a whole where the cloth should be. i looked back and my cusion vanished. i looked ahead as my heart begans to take a pause as the world moves in slowmotion. i seen the old lady as the street lights flickerd on and off, she got closer and closer the light stayed off, i hear some one breathing. the street light's clashed and came back on. i looked ahead and noticed i was just my cusion but he wasnt laughing he was a little angry insted.

part2: as my cusion appered there i notice that he had the same scratch as that old lady had, but i tride not to ask what happen and there he stood not even answering my question. i was scared but i laughed and said "come on lets go" but he snatched his hand and oped his mouth and there it was, the secret that just escaped. and right there and then i stood my ground and i roar like a lion, he stoped and laugh. my little cusion wanted to kill me because i always bullied him, i wanted to say sorry but then i figured i was lying to him and my self. i said i was stronger than him and there he stood stronger than me. his arms balled up and there i saw light near his heart, i prayed to got that something would bring him down. he was coming for me but then he began to open up his hands and wraped them around me and he wisperd "i forgive you" as he let go we smiled and he vanished. i knew he was dead and therefore it was him that wished it was him to be be gone besides me. i looked up and fell to my knees and said back on to my new angel "i will always love you"

  4. 1st Part.

The Lottery was a good book, the character that I followed was Tessie. In the beginning she was late and excited about the Lottery. In the middle she became mad, because she was late for the lottery and it was taking too long. By the end while she was late she gets the marked slip, and then each villager obtains a stone and begins to surround her.

    Part 2

I chose this text from the Lottery. "It isn't fair," she said. A stone hit her on the side of the head.

    Part 3

The reason I can relate to that text, is that it really gave more detail about what was going on in the story. Which is "The story takes place in a small village, where the people are close and tradition is paramount. A yearly event, called the lottery, is one in which one person in the town is randomly chosen, by a drawing, to be violently stoned by friends and family. The drawing has been around over seventy-seven years and is practiced by every member of the town"

  5. I read the love of life and I folowed the man that bill left. Through out the story he struggled to survive. In the beginning of the story he fell and sprained his ancle and was no helped so he had to keep on walking with it.through out the story he follows bills footseps that he left in the snow. Through out the story th mans state of health keeps getting worse. He comes near death at one point in the story. Near the end when he is ready to give up and die, he is followed by a wolf. The wolf is near death so he doesn’t pounce on him. The man is not giving up and still has to crawl 7 more miles and has several injuries. In the end he made it to the boat and went into a deep sleep.

An important sentence in the story is “Well, Bill had deserted him; but he would not take the gold, nor would he suck Bill's bones. Bill would have, though, had it been the other way around, he mused as he staggered on”. I thnk this is an important line in the story because the mad finnaly saw who his real friends were. Even though the man would be sypathetic to Bill, Bill wouldn’t do the same. Also it tells us what happened to bill and show that karma can really mess you up but most likely not as much as Bill

I have a personal connection when he said “im alone but not lost”. That reminded me of a treasure hunt. He used bills footprints like you would use a treasure hunt. When I was little my school use to have a lot of little treature hunts for use to do. For social studies or science. They usually had us looking for fake dinosaur bones or the declarationo f independence. I always was the best at all of them. When ever we played my whole class wanted me on there team.

  6. The person I chose is Mr. Summers, who was mayor of the village in the "Lottery”. In the story he was always late and I can relate to him on that because sometimes I am late to class as well. Also I can relate to him because when he showed up late to the square he made a corny joke which was "running a little late folks”. It was funny because he knows he is always late. I would do something like that because I would not want to be embarrassed when everyone looks at me. Mr. Summers was an intelligent guy because he made the lottery simple buy using a black box with the numbers in them. The people did not agree with him but he went on with his idea and did not put up a fight with them. Toward the middle of the story he became patient but seemed to rush people not noticing it. At the end of the story Ms. Summers wanted to restart the lottery because something went wrong so then he began to use his head and pay more attention to people and their action.
There was a part in the story that I thought was really unfair and that part was, “It isn’t right, it isn’t fair” Mrs. Hutchinson screamed and they were all upon her. I don’t think it was fair because he favored people, by rushing some and being patient with others. To me each person should have been given the same amount of time and treated the same. That’s one thing that I don’t relate to, but I think he has his ups and downs because he did not have to go out of his way to help the people of the town. But in the end of the story no one said what would happen when you get the paper with the dots on it. Like were they going to win $100,000 dollars or were they just going to get to ride in a limo with the mayor/Mr. Summers for a couple of hours.?

  7. Part1: The character that i chose is from "the lottery". I chose tessie hutchenson. At the begining of the story its pretty clear that she isnt liked very much because she arrives to the lottery late. I think she has a history of being late to the lottery. She has this non chanlant attitude when she arrieves.then as the story progresses her attitude/feelings start to change a little bit. When she finds out her husband won the lottery she started going crazy. But her family had to pull another ticket.and she was the lucky winner out of hervintermediate family

Part2: The line i pick from the story is "this isn't right". That line in this story is very important because it is basically part of the moral of the whole story. Ms.hutchenson repeats this line more than three times in the story. The announcer of the lottery was not fair because he rushed some people when they were picking their ticket. But he favored some and did not rush them

Part3: The part of the story that I connect to the most is the part when Ms.hutchenson yells "this isnt fair" and also the part when ms hutchenson arrives to the lottery late. I can really connect to her saying the lottery isnt fair because i would do the exact same thing if i would have won that lottery. I would have screamed at people and hit people. Next, i can connect to her being late to the lottery because i am often late to places. Like schoole, class, work, and appointments.Overall kind of like this story

  8. Part1: I choose tessie hutchenson from the lottery. At the beggining she was percieved to be disliked because she arrived to the the lottery late. It seemed to me that she didnt care that much about being late. In the middle/ towards the end she starts to seem kind of shaky because her husband was the winner of the lottery. But the tables turned when they did a redraw and she won it.At the end of the story her nonchalentness turned into her caring about the situation because she was saying this isnt right. While they werer stoning her.

    Part 2:
"It isn't fair, it isn't right," Mrs. Hutchinson screamed and then they were upon her. This line is important because no one should be cast to death becausec of a game. There was no moral reason why they should kill anyone just because of a tradition.

    Part 3:
Unfortunatly there was no personal connection that i made with the story because I could not relate to neither of the storys'.

Unfortunatly there was no personal connection that i made with the story because I could not relate to neither of the storys. The minor connection I made with the story was being punished for no reason. I had gotten in trouble before for a situation that I had nothing to do. It was mainly because of a wored of mouth incident. That is like the lottery to me because they would stone people for no apparent reason. It be just because of piece of paper. Which in actuality that is illegal to happen.

  10. I choose tessie hutchensonfrom the story The Lottery. At the beggining she was very percieved because she arrived to the lottery too late. She didn't seem very angry to be late. At the middle she started to seem sad because her husband won the lottery. They later on they redraw and she wonand was very happy. "It isn't fair," she said. A stone hit her on the side of the head.I made a personal connection becuse my grandmom and my mother played the same number. Then my grandmom got it but then my mother played the same number and won the next day.

  11. I choose the character Bill from the story "Love Of Life". Well at the begining Bill and another man where lipping painfully down a river bank, and they where walking for miles and miles. As Bill was walking he went threw lots of tribulations. First off it began to ran and snow, also his feet and ankles were sweeling up and he brgan to get weaker and weaker. So as he still trying to over come the problems that he is faceing he comes among a bear first. Well the bear began to look at bill like why are you here. Then later bill came upon a wolf that was very sick and had a limp also, but will bill was crawling the wolf was right behind him licking the blood that bill was trailing. Well to make a long story short the other man had a hard time also findong food and stuff. They were actually lost but that knew they werent in there head. As bill was making his way to the wale-ship bedford. He let the wolf get to him and he bit it in the neck. Later he rolled over his back and went to sleep the scientific men and the sailors got him and began to examine him and stuff and gave him some kind of medecine and he was getting a little better. Finally he moved to San Franciso Bay. I dont actually have a personaly connection to this story, but I did get lost in the woods with my bestfriends. So One day me and some friends of mines where all at my house and we where super bored. So we began making up some ideas of what to do. So to make a long story short we came down to having a hunt threw the woods of my backyard. So we split up into two's there where four of us. We began walking and walking and we came upon a deer at fisrt we didnt know what the heck it was, so we was scared. So me and my friend where looking at it vegurously, and it turn around at us and like it was saying "what are you doing here this is my spot or somthing" so we walked away ver slowly as we all began getting tired and the day became dawn me and my friend where calling out for my other two friends. so we all found each other and head back to my house for some dinner and a movie.

  12. The story i pick was love of life. The character i pick was bill.In the story bill was a person on something like a adventure. In this man was looking for bill and as the man was looking for bill. Bill was going through the milky way.The man who was in some kind of danger had gotting close to bill.Bill would wait for him and they would go down the lake. bill had waited for the man at the cache. As the man was coming,he had came up on this bear.the bear looked like he had wanted to get bill at first. After that bill had camed up on this wolf. When bill was going away, the wolf was liking his blood.

  13. Part 1 : chose tessie because no, one liked her in the beggining because obviously she was notorious for being a late I think everybody exspected her to be late. whe. She arrives you could tell she was kind of stuck up. but she pretended to be happy so she could win the lottery . and the middle of the you could kind of tell she was competitive. at the end of the story you could tell she was disrespectful selfish and cold hearted she did not earn winning the lottery.

  14. Part 2 : the important part of the story to me was when the old man was like ." listening to you young folk , nothings good enough for them"" next thing you know theyl be wanting to go back living to living in caves, no body works, live that way for a while " the reason I piked that part was because the elderly people should have more say then any 1 else . the reason is because they've been there and done that and they know what's better for the younger people. if anyone won the lottery it should have been the old man. because I belive you would have made the right choice for that fillage he was also more expsoerinced

  15. The characters were determined to win wat was to be won the whole time.they weree not ther same as they used to be.characters were also changing because at first they were all into the ritual and now they are not. they might also be changing because they dont think that the lottery or the way they do it is not the same anymore.some characters started off being beggey at the begging and calm at te end they were suprised on who won what. the line that i would have to choose would have to be a line from the lottery the line says that isint fair that isnt right. the line is important beacuse the person that is saying that says that because nobody remebers the ritual. everyone is not doing it for the same reason anymore.the old man said that it isint the same anymore and he has been doing it for seventy seven years. they were just not commited as much as they were. this relates to me beacuse i was chosen fo something very important and teachers voted to see who the lucky student would be and it turned out to be me. on the other hand some of the students thought it was unfair to them. they then decided that we should have a vote on it as a whole third grade class so we did and it was still me because i was very well known. so finnaly we drwed names from a hat but that time it wasnt me so i ended up thinking it was unfair and it should have just been the way it was at first. so thank god i was the one who was able to take the trip to an acdemy well known. something else also happend to someone i know she was intered in a contest and the other kids that were not intered thought she was being treated diffrently at the time i did to they used to let her get away with just anything and thats not how its supose to go so they did end up treating her the same as every one else.

  16. Part 1: The character i chose to write about is Mrs. Hutchinson. She was actually nervous and scared along the whole story. She often kept trying to get her mind off the lottery. Towards the end of the story she thought the lottery was beginning to become "UnFair" .

Part 2: "It isn't fair, it isn't right," Mrs. Hutchinson screamed and then they were upon her.

This line is important to the story because the Hutchinson's thought the game was becoming unfair towards the end . This line also shows that Mr.Summer didnt give Bill enough time to choose his paper.

Part 3: I connected to the two parts above because i would have probably pointed out what Mrs.Hutchinson pointed out if it was my daughter. I also connected to that point in the story because there pnce was a time i had participated in a game. There was only 4 players. The object of the game was to sit in the first chair that you see open before the music stops. There was a time i was one of the 2 last people standing and there was only one chair. so out of nowhere this girl pushes me on the floor. Meanwhile before i could even get up the girl was already sitting in the last chair availible. In my situation i felt like it wasn't fair because the other girl "fouled" me and took my right of winning the game.

  17. part 3 : i had a personal connection with the grandpa . the reason i did was bacuse i could realte to the fact he dint want youger peoole to make decisons . i can agree with him also beacuse i hate when some one younger than me gets to make decions because i belive the eldest always knows best . one time i wanted too go to the mall . i personaly dindt think it was good form y little sister to go with me . first beacuse i get disracted really quick . second beacus e i dindnt want to loos e aher and some one snatch her up . and third beacuse i know people who wasnt paying attention and lost there little sister in the mall . but my mom thought othrewise . she thoughtt my sis could make decion for her self witch i thought was rong but my mom let her pick what she wanted to do abd we went to the mall toghter and what do you know she went missin a few hours later i eventually found her but i think the eldest in the group should have a made a decsion for her . beacus she didnt know what she wanted but i knew she didnt want to be lost . thats a story why i can relate to the old man and how younge r peole shouldnt make decisons .

  18. I chose the character Tessie Hutchison. At first in the beggining of the story it seemed like she loved her family alot. But at the same time it seemed like she hated where she lived and the people around her didnt like her.She hated the rules of the town and the people in it and the people felt the same way about her. Then in the heading toward the end of the story she was saying that her husband didnt have enough time to choose a ticket he was rushed ,because she didnt want him to die. So the town game him another chance her husband but instead of the towns people drawing her family would have to draw. I thinked that happenen , because the town dont like her and the disrespectful joke she said. then at the end she got stoned then her voice changed i was imagining her voice sounding with hatred and dispare when she kept saying it aint right.

  19. Part 1: I choose Tessie from the lottery because she was late to the lottery and acted like she forgot all about it. I think this is not her first time being late to the lottery, and it had been that way for years. She really didn’t expect for her husband to pull the ticket for their family and she really thought it was unfair. Toward the end she felt as if she was really treated unfair. She probably thinks that they could change the rules of the game and the procedure.
Part 2: I line I choose was "It isn't fair, it isn't right," Mrs. Hutchinson screamed and then they were upon her. I choose this because to me it was fair she really didn’t want to accept the fact that she had got the ticket with the black dot out of her family. I think Tessie should just play the game how it goes. She was really just a sore winner and really didn’t expect to get the black dot. She would have thought it was fair if anyone else got the black dot except for her. It was nothing she could do about it but just stand there and get hit by the stones. It was kind of sad because her youngest son had to still throw stones at her. You could tell many people in the village did not like her.

Part 3: I could relate to Tessie because I wouldn’t like for people to throw stones at me and I had to just stand there. She probably thought it was cruel. They probably didn’t even care if she got hurt by the stones they was throwing at her. Tessie probably think they should change some of the rules of the game I would think the same thing because they should think about the safety of the people. I also can relate because I would be the first to express my expressions if I thought something was unfair , and make sure it was fix. I also think he could have at least timed the time they had to pull a ticket out of the black wooden box.

  20. P.1
Mr.Summers wanted to improve the lottery by making a box for it . He liked to rush people and that's what caused the problem with the lottery . He started to be patient towards the middle and end of the story though .
    P.2
"It isn't fair , it isn't right!" Mrs.Hutchinson screamed and then they were upon her . I chose this because this quote is very true . It isn't right fair that they choose people for something like that through a lottery . It just isn't right that that is the way some must experience death in that way .

I think the personal connection would be in the lottery because of the way things were done were just so unfair and many things to me just aren't very fair . Other than that i do not see a big personal connection .

  22. i think my personal connection is were cassia mind set is because of she knew that the lottery rules and that they should change the tradition and i can compare because my family takes their kids to chucky cheese every 7 birthday. and i think Dave and buster, they found out that the lottery is to just throwing rocks at the person that wins.
it just so happens to be that cassia won but its sad cause she knew it was something fish or it was a catch to the lottery. And they use the dead body’s to fertilize there plants thousands of years ago, but now there just killing people for no reason. And i think since they know about it why continue it.
    Part 2
i think the important line was when the young generation considering to quit the lottery in there town, and the old man got mad.

    3. "who’s got the lottery" sound like who got a pencil, its what everyone ask in my class room and i can compare both things together, both definitions are alike.
Quotes by Shirley: “My name is Mary Katherine Blackwood. I am eighteen years old, and I live with my sister Constance. I have often thought that with any luck at all, I could have been born a werewolf, because the two middle fingers on both my hands are the same length, but I have had to be content with what I had. I dislike washing myself, and dogs, and noise. I like my sister Constance, and Richard Plantagenet, and Amanita phalloides, the death-cup mushroom. Everyone else in our family is dead.”

  24. The character that I choose from the book The Lottery was Tessie. In the beginning of the story Tessie wasn’t making any friends and nobody really liked her. She made an appearance to the lottery. She said that she was late because she had to clean up her house. She made a smart move in explaining why she was late. From the start of the story she acts like anything doesn’t matter. Her attitude changed really negative during the end of the story especially when she found out that she was the winner of the lottery.
The quote that I choose from the story is when she said it wasn’t fair when she got hit by a rock by one of the people that were living in that town. That right there alone is that the people in that village didn’t want her to win the lottery.
A personal connection is that everyone in the town wanted to win the lottery but Tessie won. So if I didn’t win the lottery I wouldn’t throw a stone at her, I would try to be her best friend instead of her enemy.

  25. First:i chose tessie
When Tessie arrives late to the lottery, admitting that she forgot what day it was, she immediately stands out from the other villagers as someone different and perhaps even more threatening. Whereas the other women arrive at the square calmly, chatting with one another and then standing placidly by their husbands, Tessie arrives flustered and out of breath. The crowd must part for her to reach her family, and she and her husband endure good-natured teasing as she makes her way to them. On a day when the villagers’ single focus is the lottery, this breach of propriety seems inappropriate, even unforgivable; everyone comes to the lottery, and everyone comes on time. The only person absent is a man whose leg is broken. Although Tessie quickly settles into the crowd and joins the lottery like everyone else, Jackson has set her apart as a kind of free spirit who was able to forget about the lottery entirely as she performed her chores.

  26. I read the The Lottery. It was a good book. I thought it was going to be about the the movie the lottery ticket. I must admit at first I didn’t like the story until I go deeper into it. Another thing was that the town was called a village because it was so small. I must admit at first I didn’t like the story until I go deeper into it. The story is about Jessie. I chose Jessie because in the beginning of the story she is excited about the lottery. Then she began to realize that she is late for the lottery and Jessie starts to get angry. Soon she arrives at the lottery, then she receives her slip she doesn’t know that she has the marked slip and as soon as she opened it he villagers began to surround her. I liked Jessie’s character because she didn’t let anything stop her from getting to that lottery but when once she opened the marked slip she knew that was the end for her.
Jessie had said that it wasn’t fair that she got the marked slip because she was late. Also because it was a lottery and that everyone should have drew their slip from out of the box, but she didn’t get that chance. And it’s not fair for her because out of three hundred people only one person got stoned. Jessie and I made a huge connection; first because first we are excited about something then comes to find out we can’t get what we really want and desire on certain occasions. I agree with Jessie that it wasn’t fair for her to be stoned by 300 people in the village that is very cruel and don’t condone violence; they could have at least waited for her to get there. There village is crazy. That’s like us drawing names for a project or something and the person who name doesn’t get drawn doesn’t have to do the project. To be honest that is inhuman like for anyone to stone someone in my point of view.
