Odyssey Love

Valentine's Day is on the way; love is in the air.  With that in mind, LOOK at this picture by Romare Beardon.  Use this picture as your inspiration for a discussion of "love" in The Odyssey.  Think about these questions:
Who is loving who?  Is their love true?  You can talk about love as shown in the painting, or love as represented in Homer's "The Odyssey".  300 words or more.

THIS IS NOT A DISCUSSION OF LOVE IN YOUR OWN LIFE

  1. love is every where in the odyssey, for example, queen penelopy and odesseys who share s child togather. i treasure there love story becasue its a love story shard every where in the united states. when odessyes was on his long sad hard working journey, it seemed as if he has found love, but it was the female genders who raped him repreatly over and over, that has found love. the queen and godesses found plent of love for odesseyes, who apprently shows no type of response to there emotions and feelings towards him because his heart is with penelope. i bealive that odsseus mother is also a big pa of the love circle because she loves her family and even though she may not show it at all times. we can she it, cause she clary state to oddesues before he goes to war, thae him an tel him to be strong his kingdom, thats my favriot 4 love figures on the oddesy

  2. In the movie The odyssey Odysseus was married to a queen named Penelope. And Odysseus and Penelope were deeply in love and nothing could come between their love.In this picture it looks as if it is Penelope making those winding things. And there are other men in the picture trying to offer there wealth and fortune for her to marry them. But Penelope is still waiting for odysseus and refuse to let anything stop her wait for him. it is her goal to wait until their son grows a beard and from the looks in the picture the boy on the side is telemachus their son. Yes their love is true because Penelope held on for many years and their love is still strong. you wont believe that he is dead will stop at nothing until telemachus's beard is on his face. In the picture I see a ship which represents odysseus's ship. I see maids and suitors staNDing in line. I do not think that the man that is nealing is odysseus . Because penelope looks as if she is hesitant and doesnt want to touch the mans hand.

  3. This picture is talking about how odessyus wife is at home and she has all these people are in her home which her husband made, and she is staying faithful to him. I see that the lady sitting down is his wife .The maid is on the floor helping her. The people in the back are the men who are take over her home. The man has come to her to ask which of them will she marry .He known that she will not marry them because she is still in love with her husband .The boat in the back ground represent how he is trying to get home and he cant get there .The board represent the part in the story when she told them in that that she would wavy a rug in the honor in her husband .the black birds in the window is saying that there is some darkness coming to the path of the boat . the fat man in the back is the man who gave her all the sheep pig ,and the fools, and all the entertainment . All the men in the back are people who have come to court her . They are all starting to get anger because she wont pick anyone . That all I see in this picture .

This picture is very intense. It was a mixture of love and sadness. With this picture it reminds the of this story call “The Odyssey”. Where the character Odysseus and his lovely wife who are madly in love share a bond of love and togetherness that is tighter than anything. Odysseus was so in love with her that he would do anything to make her happy. And what made their love even stronger and unbreakable was when Odysseus’s son was born. But that also came out to be the saddest day of his life. The same day his son was born was the same day he had to go fight a war that wasn’t even necessary for him to fight. He was sent many miles away from his loved ones and wife and child. With Odysseus leaving, his wives love for Odysseus grew more and more as the days, weeks, months, years, and even a decade went by she still never gave up. Or fell out of love with him. To me love is word that should never be used loosely and when I say the love that Odysseus and his wife Penelope had is what I would call true LOVE! Especially to know and have the feeling and has been told that your husband is dead for many years and still never give up hope and still love and chariest that person. Also to have many many many men waiting foe her to remarry and she never does is that devoted love for someone.

  5. Really to me it's weird but Odysseus & Penelope are in love for a while, but then there came there son named Telemachus. You can tell thay are deeply in love with each other.Odysseus is a responsible man who takes great care of his family and make notice of everything that should be done.Penelope & odysseus will remain lovers because what they have going on is something true and they dont any complications come between thereselves.Luckly Odysseus was able to see his son be born, because before he heard his son being born he was going to fight in the trojan war,so that gave him the suggestion to just head back to his house. She was so happy that he could make it back on time to see his son being brong into this world. This is how you know Odysseus is a real man because he said that he wasn't thinking about the trojan war because his son was more important.Thats a Real Father! But then when his son was born he had to rush back so he could still fight in the trojan war.I dont beleive that odysseus wanted to leave and go back and figh in the trojan war and risk his life he had to.When Odysseus came back they all lived happy after they had deeply love for each other. To me this is what i think TRUE LOVE is.Love is always in the AIR.

  6. I think the painting is full of love becuase of how the people are reaching out to each other. The person that loves the other person is the prince and the maid. The reason why i think the prince is a prince is because of what he is wearing, and the maid is a maid because she is not wearing any thing fansty. I dont think its ture love because he is hinding his love to the maid to his family, if it was true love he would not be afraid to show he's love in public. I see the white boat that means that odysseus is there so that probaly means that that prince is mot a prince he's a king of itheca and the maid or queen is odysseus's wife.
That is may way of explaining the paiting.

  7. Well in this picture refering to the story "The Odyssey", its telling us about when "O" told his wife to raise his son to become a man. Also to marry again if he wasnt back before his son has grown a full beard. This picture shows that she stuck to his word even thow she knew that he was still alive. So this picture is when the men come to meet panelape and to try and be the next king over Ithaca. Their love is very true because she actully had faith that he was coming back and that he was still alive. Even thow O's mother didnt believe and killed herself because she thought he was dead his wife had faith. Also his wife actually waited for more than a decade for "O", if it was any other girl like that they probably wouldnt wait that long and find some one new. O's journey was crazy also he stuck to his word, and was to come back home to Ithaca to his wife. He faced all kinds of trials and tribulations on his way back, like getting raped by to imortal women, and all the beautiful and nice women and Ilands he was on. He could have easliy just stayed on one of those islands and just been king of that island and started a new family. Being the true man that he is he strived to come back to his wife where the real love is. If we had more couples like "O" and his wife we wouldnt have any devorses and cheaters and stuff like that. Thats a true relationship and true love, demonstated by "The Great Odesseous", and his wife Panelape.

  8. In the picture above, the biggest two people are loving each other. There is true love because the two of them is reaching towards each other; showing how much they care and love each other. Love can be described in many different ways. For instance, the love that Odysseus and Penelope had was priceless. Odysseus and Penelope had love that would never end. Their love ended up having a beautiful boy named Telemachus. The day Telemachus was born his father, Odysseus, was taking away to go battled in the Trojan War. Odysseus had made a promise to Penelope that she must remarry by the time Telemachus had grown a beard if he hasn’t return to Ithaca. During Odysseus journeys, he experienced some “unbalanced” moments. Odysseus had slept with a couple of different goddesses. Even though he shared his time with other women, he still thought of his wife. He knew that no other women could ever take Penelope’s place. His love for Penelope was special. After the Trojan War was over, Odysseus had his hopes on returning home to his son and wife. Penelope remained faithful over the twenty years that Odysseus was away. She only could think of no man but him. She didn’t want to move on or ever forget about Odysseus. Her cares for him made her somewhat flighty and excitable. Though her love for Odysseus is unyielding, she responds to the suitors with some indecision. She never refuses to remarry outright. Instead, she puts off her decision and leads them on with promises that she will choose a new husband as soon as certain things happen. She chooses to make the suitors compete for an event that only Odysseus could win. In the end Odysseus ends up taking back over his kingdom and continues to love Penelope and Telemachus unconditionally.

  9. In the story of Odyssey, Odysseus told his wife before he went on his journey that if he doesn't return before his son his a bread on his face that to find another love & give the kingdom to his son. On his journey he was missing his wife & wanted to be with her, he showing his love & perfection for her & his son. On his journey he experienced bad times. He had other women but he was really missing his wife. He loved Penelope with all his heart and would do anything to be with her. Penelope stayed faithful for over twenty years until she married someone else. Odysseus returned back and won his kingdom & he was finally back with his beloved wife & child. This photo is just like Odysseus telling his wife that he is leaving away from home for a long time & that he promises to come back & be with her. Love is when you'll do anything for an person & believe in them through whatever & that's what Odysseus did to his wife. He loved her through it all.

  10. There are many essential emotions that form the building blocks of our lives. These emotions help to shape the people that we are. These feelings are emotional necessities to ultimately keep us happy. No piece of literature these feelings more evident than the Odyssey by Homer. Throughout the course of this book there is one major emotional theme, love.
A lot times in life we search for a soul mate, someone to share our love and life with. Odysseus and Penelope's lasting relationship is an obvious description of love in the Odyssey. Although Odysseus is gone for twenty years he never forgets his faithful wife in Ithaca. This love helps him fight through the many hardships that he goes through on his journey home. Penelope also shows this same kind of love for Odysseus. At home in Ithaca, she stays loyal to Odysseus by revealing his shroud and delaying her marriage to the suitors that are courting her. She always keeps the hope that her love, Odysseus, will return. Odysseus and Penelope's marriage clearly illustrates the theme of love.
The Odyssey also illustrates other relationships where love is of great importance one of the most emphasized is the father-son relationship between Odysseus and Telemachos. This relationship is a little awkward because they both never really got to know each other but they still care for each other's well being. When Odysseus hears of all the suitors ruining Telemachos future fortune and mistreating him, he wants to return and revenge the disrespect of his family and property. Odysseus, like any parent, also misses his only child while he is at war. Telemachos on the contrary also reveals a lot of love for his father. Telemachos leaves Ithaca, experienced, to find any knowledge of his father in hope that he is still alive. Telemachos throughout most of his life has lacked a father figure and desperately needs that special help and guidance from Odysseus as he becomes a man. Their relationship seems to show how love can give you the strength to carry on.

    1. In this painting you can see that there is true love. You can see that a man is getting pulled away from his lover. He is reaching out to her and he is so close but still can not touch her. In the book he was not far from his wife but it still took him 10 years to get to her. In the back round of the painting i can see the boat that symbolizes the journey that he had to go through to get to his wife/lover. The people behind him are all the gods that was holding him back from getting home. The weeving machine in the back round was symbolizing the blanket she had to finish to marry another man to make king and in the book she kept restarting so that she wouldn't have to marry again. There for, i believe that they are madly in love with each other. I say madly because, she waited for him and did not no weather or not he was alive and she never lost faith in him like everyone else did. i also say madly because, he never had a doubt in his mind about his wife moving on and finding a new husband and living her life. The boy in the painting next to his wife was his son that he had to leave with his mom he also never gave up hope that his dad will soon return for him and his mother. So I can see that they all love each other very much and anyone who can wait that long for someone with out talking to or hearing from in 10 years has to have the most faith i have ever read about or seen. So yes they have a whole lot of love………this one is fixed

  11. Love is in the air between Odysseys and Penelope. They have true love. Penelope was the queen and Odysseus became king by marrying Penelope. If Penelope were to give up on Odysseus then the man she married would become king of Ithaca. The wooers were hoping she would choose one of them. She did not begin her life in this way though. It was her father's brother, Tyndarius, who was king. Odysseus was one of the original suitors of Helen and came to the Spartan court for that purpose. It is possible that the hand of Penelope was a reward to Odysseus arranged by Tyndareus. It was Odysseus who had proposed the oath that settled the suit for Helen. Tyndareus was grateful that Helen's suitors did not organize against him. But Odysseus gained little by marrying Penelope. In fact, though it was normal for the man to move to the woman's land and rule, Penelope left with Odysseus to be queen in his land. They must have loved each other deeply for Odysseus to choose this option. So on with the story .. Penelope could have chosen a husband from one of the wooers. Her new husband would be king. He would then take care of her and kill Odysseus if he returned. Odysseus could have stayed with Calypso forever. But since Penelope and Odysseus shared a familial love for one another, she confounded the wooers, and he came home with gifts, but no women.

  12. In this photo, love is definitely in the air. I think that this photo is great at demonstrating the love that these two people are showing towards each other. I think that the girl and boys in the picture are in love. I also think that they were eventually going to be separated because of something in the story that is about to happen. In the picture, I can see that the two individuals in the story are unhappy in some type of way. I think that this is an example of when Odysseus had to leave his wife and go to war. The love these two shared was true. Even when the two were separated, his wife stayed true to their relationship.
The boat in the back ground represent how he is trying to get home and he cant get there .The board represent the part in the story when she told them in that that she would wavy a rug in the honor in her husband .the black birds in the window is saying that there is some darkness coming to the path of the boat . the fat man in the back is the man who gave her all the sheep pig ,and the fools, and all the entertainment . Yes their love is true because Penelope held on for many years and their love is still strong. you wont believe that he is dead will stop at nothing until telemachus's beard is on his face. In the picture I see a ship which represents odysseus's ship. I see maids and suitors staNDing in line.
Penelope also needed love without love penelope would have remarried as soon as odesseus didnt return. she might have gotten into a marrige that she wouldnt be happy in .And telemachus would have become hostile and violent And thats why love is impoetant.Keshaun Almond

  13. There was love all over the place in the odyssey.there were many affairs included also.there were two people who were mainly in love though.queen penelopy and oddysseus which whom the two had a baby boy together.there child was named telechamus.they both were deeply in love.you can tell by their actions.they never gave up on each other.oddysseus made surethat he didnt put his family nor town in danger.so there for he decided to go to war with the opposing enemies.he went to fight in the trojan war.the painting located above is similar to the love life of oddysseus and queen penelope, because as you can see the people are reaching out for each other.the women represents odysseus's wife and the maids.the little boy represents oddysseus's son telechamus. The men who are working on getting with queen penelope.the picture is very vivid and show good details.

  14. In this painting , i see love everywhere . In the Odyssey love was everywhere . You see Queen Penelope never gave up on her marriage , even when Odysseus disappeared for all of those years . There was also love from his son . His son never gave up on his father neither . He would try his best to fight off the men who tried to take his mothers heart . This painting reminds me of Odysseus reaching out to Queen Penelope and she didnt even know it was him . The Gods also loved Odysseus . It seemed like almost every female God wanted to be with Odysseus . . But Odysseus only wanted Penelope , and Penelope only wanted Odysseus . Thats why when Odysseus returned he killed all those ignorant men who tried to steal his wife , and lived happily ever after with Queen Penelope .
